Christmas Music

I was listening to Christmas music the other day and had a hilarious flashback:

When I was on my mission in Japan, my brother and sister-in-law sent me the Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas CD.

Being the Nazi mission rule keeper I was, I couldn't listen to it.

Because our mission president would only let us listen to songs that were in the hymn book.

And there might have been other rules.

Like it had to be Mo-Tab.

Or something.

I can't really remember.

In any case, like I said, I couldn't listen to it.

Several months later, just a couple of months before I was due to return to America, I got my very first American companion.

She dug out the CD and pleaded to listen to it.

"Come on, Neff Shimai!  Man!  The First Noel is totally on here, man!  We can listen to that, dude!"

She's from California in case you were wondering.

She also says she feels the spirit when listening to Monster Ballads but whatever.

I objected at first being that I was the senior companion and didn't want to be the one who was responsible for broken rules.

Eventually I relented.

And we rocked out.

To Christmas music.

On electric guitars.

In April.

I'm pretty sure Tomlin played the air guitar.

Nothing short of hysterical.

Your mission president sounds terrible. Sheesh.

The funny thing is, Amy, I'm pretty sure your dad relaxed the music policy from the previous president and just forgot to tell me. When I did my departure interview I mentioned the music policy and he looked at me like I was a nutbar. Which, in all fairness, I was, but no one has to know that.

I'm pretty sure that when I saw your blog title on my blog scroll that song is the first thing that came to mind. It was the best music I listened to my entire mission...next to "It's getting hot in here" by Nelly at the gas station. I needed that mission experience with the you and the orchestra to make it through the future rough times!

I hadn't gotten to the bottom of this post and I knew your mission companion from California was Teags. I am pretty sure we rocked out to an embarrassingly amount of Backstreet Boys in the dorm.

I <3 Teags.
