I totally knew that my hard-as-a-rock carmel wasn't my fault. I called mom last night and while telling her about my failure/recanting the recipe back to her (I kind of felt like I was making a potion), she informed me that I was minus one key ingredient - 3 cups of cream. That's right, THREE CUPS. It turns out that when my sister was typing up the recipe five years ago, she missed it.
I'm so relieved that I don't have to think of myself as a bad cook.
And just so you know, I was able to warm up the carmel enough in the microwave to get it out of the pan. It now rests in peace at the bottom of the trash can - like a giant piece of concrete.
