The Smartest Man in the World

Husband passed his final certification test yesterday.

PASSED!

What a smart, gritty guy!

Luckily, they didn't give him any crap about his wound covering, but they did go over his body several times with one of those little detection wand thingys.

Apparently cheating is at an all time high...and people are finding all kinds of super fun ways to do it.

In other news, Carolyn and I had this conversation the other day:

Me:  Carolyn, what does a dog say?
Carolyn:  Bye bye.
Me:  Carolyn, what does a kitty say?
Carolyn:  Bye bye.
Me:  Carolyn, what does a bear say?
Carolyn:  Bye bye.

She had her 15-month check-up this morning.

I dread going to the pediatrician because there's always something I'm not doing right.

Today was no exception.

I was told that at 28.5 pounds, Carolyn officially weighs "too much".

We're to cut back on her milk and carb intake effective immediately.

I was also scolded because Carolyn doesn't point to her ears, eyes, mouth, and nose on command.

I've had just about enough of this.

You could try changing doctors...
Also, my almost three year old weighs the same as Carolyn and they yell at me for her not being on the growth curve. As parents, we really can't win.
So we don't go any more. Guess what? Both my kids are still alive. Shocking, I know.
They eat when they are hungry, they stop when they're full. Our job as parents is to not mess that up. Other than that, kids this age will self regulate!
My four year old throws his candy away half eaten; and my skinny, skinny girl eats all of hers. Kids are different, thank the Lord. I wouldn't want my friend's kids for all the tea in China...
Trust the mommy gut! What does it say?

You can definitely feel every ounce of those 28 pounds when you carry her around, but I don't think Carolyn is even a little bit fat. There's no question that she is SOLID - there's no fluff. I'll change some of her milk to water since she does want to have a drink at all times, but other than that, I'm not changing a thing :)

Seriously, get a new pediatrician. If at any point my pediatrician had told me that my son didn't weigh enough and to supplement with formula, I would have gotten up and walked out the door.

That isn't because I am a nursing-nazi, but because I know my kid. I know what I looked like as a kid. And what my husband looked like as a kid. We were the 100% on length, 50% and under on weight. My son is skinny, he isn't going hungry (he eats all day), and he will never be the baby with all the chubby rolls. It isn't in his genes.

Luckily, our pediatrician is pretty rad and has seen all sorts of ways a baby can grow- so the fact that I have a long lean kid (I mean I am 5'9" and Adam is 6'0") is expected if anyone simply looks at us.

If you ever have a 6 year old ordering a full pound of brisket at Rudy's for himself/herself, then you know you have a problem on your hands. (this is something we witnessed in New Braunfels, that kid looked like a non-blue Violet Beauregard. He was bigger around than tall. Very disturbing.)

Actually this was the conversation:
Dad: Son, do you want a half pound of brisket or a full pound.
Son (derisive tone): Pssshhh, a full pound dad. Duh.
Dad: nods, orders 3 pounds of brisket for himself, his 6 year old son and 4 year old daughter. They sit at nearby table and EAT IT ALL.

Adam and I can't even finish a full pound of brisket. And we eat a lot.

Oh I think that is crazy too. My V was 15 months on the 1st and she weighed 26lbs and is 31 inches tall. 80% in weight and she is just as solid as your cutie. We have a budda belly and eat when we are hungry and don't when she isn't wanting to eat. I do give her a lot of water and only 3 sippy cups of 8 oz. or less of milk. Other than that, she eats what we eat...a great mixture of foods. Good advise to find a dr. that listens to you and makes you feel comfortable being a mom.

Great job on the exam, even without cheating!

I just looked at your peep-eye pictures and Carolyn does NOT look fat. I didn't see any rolls. I also looked at the weight chart for baby girls. So she's at about 95%, right? She is not off the chart, so why the big worry? She's a baby and doesn't have any rolls, she's sturdy. :) Don't let that doctor get to you. And if she's behind on pointing at body parts, then I'm a really bad mother. I just looked up my notes on Kevin and he didn't do it until he was 22 months old. He started animal sounds around 17 months. You need a new doctor. I hope you have other options.

I read an article today about how much obesity there is in Mexico. They were talking about this poor 4 year old who was on a "diet". I'm sorry, but that word should not even have to be in the vocabulary of a 4 year old. When this little girl would reach for something she couldn't have, her grandma would slap her and and tell her "You know why." I certainly don't think Carolyn is overweight. Also, Reese is only 50th percentile for weight and 95th for height. It ought to be obvious from looking at her parents that she's not underweight, just genetics.
PS - don't you wonder what Carolyn would have been like as a mom?

I don't have kids (yet), but doctors are always going off of charts that are based on norming, but kids are different and grow at different rates. Carolyn is not fat and you've done a great job of feeding her. I would start looking for a new pediatrician.
