1. I had some business yesterday down by Kroger so I thought I'd just go ahead and do my grocery shopping there. Why didn't someone warn me I'd spend twice as much as usual??
2. However, even though I spent A LOT more money, I couldn't have asked for better service. There was only one check-out line open so I had two checkers and four baggers all to myself.
3. One of the checkers opened my eggs and checked every, single one of them. One of the baggers told me like seven times that "the checker checks every egg every time". Then he told the old lady behind me the same time three times and was clearly confused when the old lady told him that she didn't have any eggs in her basket.
4. Grocery shopping takes 327 hours when you have to read the label on every item you're buying. HOLY CRAP. I already hated shopping to begin with and now, I hate it even more. Oh, and just so you know, Diet Orange Crush still has 4 grams of carbs per 8 oz. serving. Diet Sunkist has none. Clearly we'll be buying Sunkist from now on.
5. I've been holding off applying for Medicaid for Husband's medical bills. Because I didn't think we "deserved" to apply for help.
6. Today, after doing the estimate of what the bills will be, I finally headed downtown to the Medicaid office to see what it would take to get approved. I was still very, very hesitant and didn't feel like I should be there until I saw who was there and heard why they were there (no one seems to see the need for discretion at the Medicaid office). After that all I could think was, "Well, good grief, I should be able to apply, too!"
7. I know there are normal people who have been/are on Medicaid, right?? Is there any reason why you never see those people at the Medicaid office?
8. At the urging of one of the awesomes (an applicant, not an employee) at the Medicaid office, I also drove down to the WIC office to see if we couldn't get approved for that, too. Because, hey, why not?? They set me up an appointment for tomorrow. It's at bleedin' 7:15am.
9. Since my old job at Lamar University was on the way home from the WIC office, I thought I'd stop by to show off Carolyn. Except for one thing...when I drove by, not only were there no cars there, THE ENTIRE BUILDING was gone. As in like there wasn't even a trace it'd ever been there.
10. I found my former co-workers at an off-campus location. Ever since this whole deal with Husband started, I've been kicking myself for quitting my university job with insurance benefits. Turns out that due to budget cuts, the position I had was eliminated at the beginning of June! They're now trying to contract out all of the jobs in custodial, maintenance, and grounds, which means that the entire department I worked in will also be eliminated in the coming months.

I love me some orange soda. It's because of all the Fanta I had to drink in Zimbabwe.
I also love shopping at Ralphs (California's Kroger). They double coupons and give me cash back just for shopping there.
That's crazy about your building being gone. It's like something from Lost!
And finally, you are awesome. If my husband had to go on some special diet I'd probably make him go it alone. I hope for both your sakes that the wound is getting smaller.
Yep, Physical Plant, the Continuing Education Department, the Supply Center, and the Custodial staff will all be gone. And they put a freeze on most hiring.
I love Kroger because of the help there. And the way you described the guy with the eggs, I know exactly who it is; but he's great. WIC, Medicaid? You go girl. You and Nick have paid taxes, your family has, etc. Get what you can, that is my philosophy. You are good people and I know when you don't need it anymore, you will turn it over to someone else. At this horrible time in your lives, it is your turn.
