8/17/11

*I did it.
*I changed the wound dressing.
*And it was every bit as horrible as I thought it would be.
*No, wait, more horrible.

*The gauze stuck to the inside of the wound.
*I used nearly every bit of saline solution the wound RN gave us to moisten it up.
*I ended up having to rip it off.
*They prescribed Vicodin for Husband.
*But, taking Vicodin is like taking tic tacs.
*I hurt him.
*Bad.

*Husband is running a fever.
*It hasn't gotten over 101, but it got thiiiiiiis close.
*Upon discharge the nurse said we were to come back to the ER if he had a fever topping 101.
*Even on Tylenol, it's hovering in the mid to upper 99's.
*What are we supposed to do?
*Am I freaking out for no reason?

*I am so tired.
*I feel scared all the time.

If he is running a fever, he might be infected. It happened to me after my surgery. Is he a taking an antiobiotic right now?

No, ma'am, they took him off the antibiotic when we were discharged. They told us to come back to the ER if it got to 101 or higher. But, I don't know if the Tylenol is just masking something we should be paying attention to.

We've got a call in to the doctor. Here's hoping for a quick response.

You are going to be one tough cookie after all this! Well you already are tough so you'll be like super Erin! You are so brave to take care of all of it. I hope you get some rest soon though too :) Thinking of you guys....

Oh, I could never be a nurse. I pray that he heals quickly.

This is just a suggestion- take him off the tylenol for one or two doses and see what his fever does. That way you can know for sure whether it is too hot or not.

Plus, tylenol is basically just a fever reducer anyways- does he really need it? As pain relief it is like taking placebo- it reduces fevers, but it does little else.

And I am not kidding when I suggest you just pore saline on to de-stick the gauze. I had to do that when my mom had a breast reduction 14 years ago. It was serious surgery with like tracks and stitches and staples- and I had to destick everything. Getting everything damp made it not pull at the scabbing so bad (and the stitches.). I know you aren't supposed to get some stuff wet, but when the options are wet or infected, I will take my chances with wet.

Also, good luck. I have been thinking about you guys a lot these past couple of weeks and wish there was something I could do to help.
