8/16/11

*We are HOME!
*They told us yesterday at 11:30 that Husband was going to be discharged.
*We didn't get to leave until 4:30.

*The wound is still open.
*And it's still giant.
*They showed me how to pack it.
*I acted supremely confident.
*But inside, I was screaming, "YOU WANT ME TO DO WHAT??"

*The wound RN packed me up a bag of wound packing supplies.
*Enough to last for a couple of days.
*When we asked him how long we were going to have to continue packing the wound, he said, "I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm pretty sure it's going to take MONTHS for that to heal."
*Awesome.
*In retaliation for the bad news, I stole an entire box of surgical gloves.

*I dropped Husband off at home and went to fill his prescriptions.
*I quickly got overwhelmed by all the diabetes terms I don't know.
*The pharmacy tech made me feel stupid, so I did it all on my own.
*Just as a PS to glucometer makers, is there anyway we could make a universal test strip, for the love of Pete??

*I had a hard time sleeping last night.
*I was going over the wound packing steps in my mind.
*And also, I didn't want to bump Husband and hurt him.

I cannot imagine having to change out the wound packing...Way to be tough and strong to do it!

The diabetic stuff sucks - and the test strips are freaking expensive... If you dont have insurance, you may check on Amazon to see if they are cheaper for your meter.

You guys will do great with it - just have Nick watch the Carbs and Sweets! (one of the hardest things I had to do while I had gest. diabetes - there are carbs in everything!)

Follow the glycemic index--I have some books/cookbooks if you would like to borrow them. Lots of veggies, fruits and lean meats and you should be okay. Avoid corn and potatoes, and yes, that probably made you die inside just a little to hear me say that because potatoes are freakin' tasty! When his wound heals up adding the exercise in will help moderate his sugar levels.

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

So happy to know that Nick is home. And for packing that wound, how amazing it is that we have something put before us and we think we can't do it. Then the scripture comes to mind "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me". I think that scripture is your theme song, Erin, for how you have handled all of this.
Do you know that at Target they will swipe a discount card since you don't have insurance? I know some people that use it and they are amazed at how much money they save. Also, go to the websites of the drug manufacturers of the drugs that Nick needs. They sometimes will give you free medicine as long as you have a prescription.

It's 12:40am - I'm just now seeing this Erin. I know you're both so happy to be home!

When my daughter had her PICC line put in and they wouldn't let us leave the hospital until I showed them I could do an entire infusion by myself, I acted confident and really wanted to run out of the room crying like a boob.
