Tag-O-Rama

HIGH SCHOOL TAG

1. Did you date someone from your high school?:

Let's see...I guess I should say yes. I "went out" with Jesse Bush for like two weeks when I was a freshman. We never went out on dates or anything. And we didn't hold hands and weren't seen in public together. In fact, I'm not sure that we ever officially "broke up" either. I loved him from afar for the remaining 3 7/8 years of high school.

2. What kind of car did you drive?:

Ford Tempo - talk about raw power

3. What was your most embarrassing moment in high school?

When I was a freshman I was in a recitation contest - I made it to the finals where I repeated the same paragraph twice. Then, we had to drive back to the hotel where there was a fully naked man walking around in front of his un-curtained window. That was the first time I ever saw a naked man and hoped that it would be my last (unfortunately, it wasn't...naked men flock to me like a moth to a flame for some reason).

4. Were you a party animal?

The only parties in Wells were held at the gravel pit where all the kids went to get drunk and have sex. I never even thought about going out there because it seemed so lame...and nasty.

5. Where you considered a flirt?

When I tell Husband how I tried to flirt in high school, he laughs and says, "That's not the right way!" I never really learned how to flirt because while the other girls were learning how to do that, I was going to 7th and 8th grade with all of my cousins at Ruby Valley School. From what I understand, you shouldn't flirt with your relatives.

6. Were you in band, orchestra, or choir?:

I was in choir my junior year and magically even made it to sing in the regional Honor Choir - this is mostly because I stood next to Candy Castle (who didn't like me). I think they were taping more of her than me when I made the audition tape. Either that or they had a quota from each school to fill and there were only four auditioners from WHS.

7. Were you a nerd?

Nope. I got good grades but I wasn't a nerd. Although sometimes I wish I had been because the nerds from high school got good jobs out of college.

8. Were you on any varsity teams?

Volleyball, basketball, and track. Remember that I went to a 1A school, but it was a good choice because it allowed me to be a SUPER ATHLETE! I seriously thought I was a star until I went to BYU.

9. Did you get suspended/expelled?

No, but I did get to deliver lunches to ISS (in school suspension) once. They had these booths you had to sit in and NEVER talk ALL DAY LONG. After I saw that, I realized that I could never make it in that room.

10. Can you still sing the fight song?

Remember the Wells High School war cry? HECK YES! L-E-O-P-A-R-D-S GO, FIGHT, WIN! And I can't mention the fight song without a shout out to the sweet WHS band.

11. Who were your favorite teachers?

Uhhh...Mr. Swabb, the hardest teacher in the whole high school, Don Noorda, because he let me get away with murder in his class, and Bill Heim, because he was HOT.

12. Where did you sit during lunch?

Wherever we were having a lunchtime practice - because I had sports practice after school, we had to have FFA practices and Student Council meetings at lunch. When we went to the lunch room, I don't know who I sat with...my sister when I was a junior and senior.

13. School Mascot?

In case you missed it in an earlier question: L-E-O-P-A-R-D-S, GO, FIGHT, WIN! My brothers and sisters went to a different high school than I did and called us "the Wells Lepers". In return, we called them the Elko Idiots (Indians). So clever!

14. Did you go to homecoming and with who?

I think I went, but at WHS, the only dance you really went with a date to was prom. I'm pretty sure I went to homecoming with a group of friends and then sat on the bleachers during the slow songs while pretending I didn't WANT anyone to ask me to dance.

15. If you could go back and do it again, would you?

That would be a hell, no.

16. What do you remember most about graduation?

That Ki Johnson and Neal Jones each gave speeches that were about 40 minutes each. It was SO hot in the gym and all I could think was, "WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP!"

17. Where did you go senior skip day?

My friend, Ki hiked with me to 12-mile. I'd never been there before because that was another huge party spot for the pot smokers (I seriously didn't think anyone in my high school did drugs...I was advised otherwise upon graduation).

18. Have you gained weight since then?

Just 50 pounds...ok, 70 (the best thing about Texas is that they don't list your weight on your driver license - that's one less lie I have to tell!) I used to think I was fat in high school. I wonder what it would be like to weigh that much now.

19. Who was your prom date?

I went with Jim Dahl. That was a mistake. I should have gone with Neal Jones, who saw me naked when he was asking me and also didn't brush his teeth (not just when he was asking me, he never brushed his teeth).

20. Are you planning on going to your 10 year reunion?

Uhhh...my 10 year reunion was 2 years ago. And no, I didn't go. I won't ever go. All the girls in my class hated me for some reason.

21. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself?

I wish I would have been nicer to everyone. I wish I wouldn't have cared so much that Jesse Bush and his gang teased me about my teeth. I wish I hadn't let him cheat off of me in Economics - I couldn't say no, because I loved him.

You couldn't pay me enough to go through High School again. Your next book should be a compilation of all the tags you've done. There's some seriously funny stuff there. Still working on your list-I'm at 54 right now and counting...

I was totally going to respond and tell you how crazy it is to hear about Wells from your perspective, but now I have to respond cause I'm practically a celebrity for being metioned in your blog! (Also, that I was very lucky to have been your friend in Wells.)

But I have to say that if I were writing about the most humiliating moment in my entire life it would be about that graduation speech. I couldn't even talk or think about it for 2 years. Thinking, much less talking would cause me to projectile vomit.

I'm sooooo sorry that you had to sit through it. Anyway, now I think... there is a certain panache with total and complete humiliation. (I WASNT even invited the the 10 year reuniion! OMG!)

One more thing: Erin, I read this blog, naturally to hear about your life, but more importantly because you're a brilliant writer. I think all these problems with jobs and career etc are a direct result of the fact that your true true true calling is as a writer.

THe fact that you've published a book and maintain this FAB blog is much more interesting any of the "nerds" have done.
