Stop Guessing

I was just reminded of another one of my pet peeves. I HATE it at work when people try to guess who has answered the phone. Is this Amy? Is this Erin? Is this Ann, Karen, or Melissa (none of whom even work here)?

Stop guessing and just ask for whoever you want to talk to. It saves me from the awkward moment where I have to say, "No, this is Erin, do you want to talk to Amy?" or having to pretend I'm Amy and then later on in the conversation admit that I am not, I was just trying to help her by taking a few phone calls.

Half the time they say no anyway, so why bother guessing at all?

It doesn't help anything this morning either that I have a mean Tylenol PM hangover. Last night for the first time in my life, I used a self-cleaning oven (which took me approximately 3 hours to learn how to use. In the end, I still didn't get it right and Husband had to stay up until 11 when it FINALLY turned off). No one warned me that it smells up your whole house and gives you the headache to end all headaches.

The one good thing about today is that even though it's really not cold enough, I pulled my black ski vest out of the closet. I'm sitting here at the office burning up but I can't bring myself to shed the vest. It's the thing I love the most next to Husband. I couldn't wait for another two months. I really am built (and fully equipped) for cold weather.

I hate it when someone calls you on the phone and doesn't tell you who they are but starts the conversation and expects you to know who they are. Drives me bonkers. "Hello?" "Hi, Heather, how are you?" "Good, and you?" "Great, what are you doing today?" "Ummm, WHO WANTS TO KNOW?"

I know! Apparently no one taught them how to hold a proper conversation. People down here always answer the phone with, "How you doin'?" and always seem thrown off when I actually answer them with "fine, thanks". Perhaps they don't want to know. Or perhaps it's Beaumontian for "Hey".
