If any of you have been in a quandary about the fruit of the Tree of Life in Lehi's dream, VOILA! It is the nashi AKA the Asian pear. During August and September of my mission when it was so hot that I didn't want to eat anything, this is what I survived on. I finally found them last week at the grocery store down the road. YAY! I love how they all come individually wrapped - like little presents...presents of deliciousness.

We've been picking winter pears off the tree down by the grain shed. They're not exactly asian pears - but sometimes it feels like heaven to be able to go on a walk and have fresh apples, plums and pears along the way.
I've always been afraid to try them precisely because of the way they are packaged. Something freaky about a lacy pear. However, I may just have to branch out and try something new thanks to you.
Heather, just remember to peel and core the nashi. I tried to eat it with the peel on once and my Japanese companion nearly had a heart attack...
Why, is it poisonous or something?
I don't think so, it's just the Japanese way to do it. Plus, the peel and the core are really tough for some reason.
