The mandatory evacuation of Beaumont was lifted yesterday morning - we immediately jumped in our car to come home to our sweltering house and unplugged fridge (courtesy of Parigi Development...they also spilled something brown and nasty all over our counter, which they did not clean up and therefore, we now have a LOVELY brown stain that encompasses our entire limited counter space). Our tap water has decided to match our counter - a BEAUTIFUL yellowy-brown.
The streets are lined with tree cuttings of uprooted trees (too bad they don't live in Ruby Valley...that's like pre-cut firewood!), destroyed road signs, and small pieces of debris. I also just braved the grocery store...it was like risking my life. I don't know that I've ever seen so many overly aggressive people in one place at one time.

We used to have a fence all the way around our patio - now we share what I am calling "the party patio" with our neighbor! You will notice that we still have our gate, just in case we want to close it. The good news is that it only took them 18 months to replace them after the last big hurricane. I'm hoping for a quicker absolution this time - I kind of feel naked without it.

Despite the fact that we left the Geo here to fend for herself, you will notice there is not a (new) nick or scratch on her. She has further authenticated her illustrious nickname - THE TANK.

So much for covered parking...the building right across from us has quite a bit more damage to the awnings. The building right in front of us also had all of the bricks sucked off the wall...I shall take a picture after lunch.

This is the fence right behind us that used to separate us from the hood apartments.
The REAL question I have today is, how on earth can these people down here look so good after a hurricane? No one at the grocery store looked frazzled, tired, or more excited than usual. I, on the other hand, look like I've been drug through a rat hole backwards.
Hopefully hurricane season is over. I'm exhausted.

At least your place wasn't entirely looted, huh? :)
Thanks for cooking us dinner despite being exhausted. It was sooo deeelish! When do you guys want to come to our place?
I'm sure if you stayed in Beaumont for 15 more years and had to live through roughly 45 more hurricanes, you'd look pretty calm at the store, too. I want to know what happened to all that ice cream!!!!
We actually ate the ice cream - all but one container of it! We are like ice cream eating machines! It was SOOOO yummy.
