A Little Fulfillment

FINALLY. A little fulfillment in my life.

Last week someone from church called me to ask me to prepare and give four workshops at the church youth conference. Now, as we all know, I totally have a degree in youth thingy-bobber-jiggers and I was SOOOO excited to FINALLY do SOMETHING with it (even if there was no money involved). It's been over a year since I've dealt with any kind of youth (unless you count 2-year-olds or cranky grandmas).

Yesterday, Husband drove me three hours out to the campsite (bless his heart, he is the best husband in the world. He switched his day off so he could go with me) so that I could give my 20-minute workshop on Joseph Smith. What they had failed to tell me was that they had changed my arrival time from 2:00 to 1:00 and as such, I was an hour late. They worked me in anyway. I gave the workshop three times, starting with the "JSGS" (Joseph Smith Game Show), throwing candy into the crowd, and trying to keep the leader-less groups of 20-30 teenagers under control.

The kids didn't know as much as I thought they would so I did a lot more talking than I had planned. Then, of course, there were the kids who just "didn't get it". They were the ones who, when the workshop turned to the more "serious" issues (wherein I shared an experience from my mission to Japan), raised their had and said, "So you can like, totally, like, speak Japanese?" or, "Yeah, I like, totally, like, heard that Joseph Smith was like, totally killed." What? Come on! Can you not like, totally, like tell that the mood has changed and we are being serious now?

All in all, I thought it went really well (despite the fact that several of the kids DID fall asleep because they had apparently stayed up until all hours of the night playing pranks on one another) and it felt SOOOO good to finally do something that makes me happy AND uses my talents (which I can safely say, have not been used once since moving to Beaumont).

And after it was all over, we sat on the porch of one of the cabins and chatted with all the other workshop givers, leaders, and anyone else who would lend an ear. My favorite part was that everyone was telling Husband how wonderful I am. YES! ME! WONDERFUL!

Sigh....too bad I can't do that everyday. Maybe then I would look forward to going to work.
