Gun Control

Nick's mom is moving. That means that we are now getting all of these random things of his that his mother doesn't want to move or throw away. Yesterday, I got a call from her at work wanting me to come to her work and pick up two shotguns. Yeah, that's right, SHOTGUNS.

Now, I don't know how they do it here in Texas (obviously not the same, SAFER way they do it in Nevada), but in Nevada when you have a gun in your car, you've gotta have a permit. Naturally, later on last night, Nick wanted me to go pick up the guns with him (and I only went AFTER he explained to me that in Texas, you don't have to have a permit to have a gun in your car and because of that, there is no way we would get pulled over and arrested on the way home. This is important not because I am scared of going to jail/serving a little time in the clink, but mostly because Dancing With the Stars came on at 7 and we had to be home by then).

So, now in the Peters household, we have three guns...two shotguns and a handgun (I don't really know where the handgun is but I know we have it somewhere). On the way home from picking the guns up, Nick said that he wants me to go with him and a man from work to get a concealed handgun permit. He also said that he wants to get me a little "girl gun" for my protection "just in case". While I have to admit that having a little six shooter with a nice mother-of-pearl inlay would be fun to tell people that I have, I would rather just MOVE TO A PLACE WHERE I DON'T NEED A GUN "JUST IN CASE". Apparently this place is NOT Beaumont, Texas.

Now, having said that, I have some things to say about Erin and gun control and gun control in general (this is to squelch any cheeky comments that I might get about me having a gun). I grew up with guns in the house. I've taken all of the safety classes. I'm actually a really good shot when aiming at small animals such as squirrels (and if I get any comments about the bloody squirrels, I will deal with those later). I trust myself with a gun. What I DON'T trust is me with a gun having to defend myself. I don't know that I could actually do it. I'm kind of a weenie like that.

On gun control in general, I agree that people have the right to own guns. I would say that I agree with the 2nd Amendment but that only gives you the right to own a gun in regards to using it in a state militia (as far as I know, anyway).

I do, however, believe in strict regulations for owning a gun...I don't know what they are yet, but I think that there should be restrictions, etc. I also don't believe that ANY normal citizen has the right to buy a semi-automatic weapon. What the hell do you need those for? You certainly don't need them for hunting or for protecting yourself. No wait, I have to take that back because if the person who has come to kill you has a semi-automatic/automatic weapon, you've got to have equal or greater fire power. Oh, hell...I have no idea. No wonder politicians get all messed up on this subject.

In any case, I think that it should be harder for criminals and psychos to get guns. I think I will call my congressman and suggest that to him... Perhaps help him out on the gun debate by giving him my great and deep thoughts about the subject.
