Low Fat Sucks

I'm now on a quasi-diet. Actually, more than anything, I've made the decision to eat better and exercise more and in turn, I expect to feel better and be able to fit into my ever dwindling Texas weather appropriate clothing (This because I've spent my entire life in places where there actually is a winter). There is just one problem: low fat food sucks.

I bought a low fat cookbook in the grocery store checkout line. I made a careful list of the recipes that sounded good and all the ingredients so I would whip them up (they have a "Dinner in Less than 20-Minutes Section...that beats Rachael Ray by 10 whole minutes). Unlike ever before, I planned out a menu for the week according to which recipes have perishable foods in them. Needless to say, I was pretty proud of myself.

Last night on getting home from work, I decided to whip up a "Lemon Chicken Tarragon Toss". The recipe includes honey, lemon juice, and cornstarch, which are apparently healthy and low fat. It also includes broccoli and mushrooms, which I promptly over cooked (I seriously can't make broccoli to save my life. I always boil it for too long and it ends up as this green pasty thing). In the end, the dish that came out smelled like a wet dog and tasted about as good.

Trying to be optimistic, I dished up husband an big bowl of it and we sat down to eat. One bite into it, husband looked at me with a pained look and said, "Baby...ummmm.....there's too much lemon in this for me".

Yeah, too much lemon, and it also smells like a canine. I almost started to cry.

Stupid low fat food. It tastes horrible AND it causes emotional problems.

Low fat does suck.

However you can cheat the calories by just getting rid of crappy oils and margarines (butter at least has some health benefits)...

Also- I live by my William Sonoma cookbooks (Italian, Poultry, Soups and Desserts are my favorite) and also this Whole Foods Cookbook that has a ton of recipes for people with allergies (my husband is lactose intolerant) The Whole Foods cookbook is awesome because it takes out all the dairy products of creamy foods but then teaches you how to make creamy foods without all the cream. So they also end up being low in fat. I will send you the real title if you want.)

I also love the magazine Cooking Light. They print some really delicious recipes in there- however you have to pay attention because they also include some freaking crazy ingredients. I buy the ones if they cover ingredients that i want to learn to cook- like pork, or beef, or they feature a particular region (like France or Spain).

Anyways- you aren't alone out there with this :)

Please send titles ASAP. I kind of fell off the "eating right" bandwagon right after writing that last post.

I've been trying to cut out the oils and just just olive oil. However, I can't seem to cut out the cream! I tried last week to make something with lite sour cream and that was also yucky. Sigh...
