Cholesterol Test

Ok, so apparently when they draw blood here at the doctor's office (or any office for that matter), they used two kinds of tubes. On tube has a serum in it to coagulate the blood and the other has a serum in it that thins the blood to expedite the testing process.

Well, the other day, a man came in to have his blood drawn for a cholesterol test. He is only five years older than me. When they drew his blood and started trying to mix it with the serum, the serum turned bright white and solidified almost immediately (usually, it just mixes with the blood).

Why? While he does have slightly elevated cholesterol to begin with, it turns out that he had eaten pizza right before coming into the office. And, it was the pizza that had caused the serum to coagulate so fast. If the grease in pizza does that to serum, can you imagine what it (and foods like it) does to your veins?

I'm eating better from now on. Seriously.

Maybe I should make one of those totally serious yet educational commercials based on this incident, kind of like the one where they cut the brain of a 35-year-old smoker in half to show the blood clot that caused his stroke. I'm calling an ad agency right now.

That guy was supposed to have fasted for 12 hours before taking the blood test, that's part of the reason for the high cholesterol test, but if you're eating a whole cheese pizza, I think that's pretty indicative what your veins are like. Good for you for making a pact to eat healthier from now on.

Ummm, yeah...that pact lasted approximately three minutes or until I saw that the Easter candy was available in stores. I'm planning on making a trip to Walmart tonight to see if I can pick any up at 50% off.
