Discouraged

Last week when we were denied for Medicaid, I was concerned.

But not worried.

Because I knew there were a few other avenues we could explore.

Today, I found out we were denied for emergency Medicaid as well.

Because, you guessed it, I, at my part time (seven hours a week) job, make $100 too much per week to qualify.

I've been trying to contact the financial aid lady at the hospital for over a week.

I finally got a hold of her to find out what paperwork they needed me to bring so we could apply for the hospital charity program.

She took one look at the stuff and said, "Yeah, I doubt you'll qualify for any help. I mean, I'll submit this, but don't get your hopes up."

I asked her what else I could do.

She said to call the iCARE program for the county, which as far as I can tell is kind of a county Medicaid program.

However, to qualify for that, Carolyn already has to be on Medicaid for her father to even be considered.

We just got the paperwork for Carolyn's Medicaid in the mail today - it's due back in Austin by Friday.

In order to complete it, we have to have a birth certificate for Carolyn, (which naturally, we don't have yet), along with my birth certificate, which currently resides in my mother's filing cabinet in Nevada.

We can apparently only apply for the iCARE up to four weeks after Husband's hospital discharge...which will be next Tuesday.

Even if we had all of the paperwork, the Medicaid lady said it will take at least three weeks to determine whether or not Carolyn qualifies for Medicaid.

Could things be any more awesome?

That totally sucks. Like, the whole situation. I'd find someone who knows how to play the system. Every state is different in the mechanics, but they all have people who live off of the state. The people who work for medicaid aren't going to tell you how their system works, but those who live on other people's tax dollars would LOVE to share how "smart" they are.
And don't feel bad for a second that you need temporary assistance. The system SHOULD be set up to support those who are generally productive members of society; not the leeches.
Also, it helps to lie about your income. They almost never check, and if they do, the worst that happens is they deny coverage, which they'd do anyway if you put the right numbers. Really, can you help it if some numbers get transposed? Suddenly $100 becomes $010. ;) Wishing you the best from afar...

Hi, I have been stalking, I mean reading your wonderful blog for a while now. I just love reading your posts. Juts a smile on my face every time. I will be praying for you in your situation. Have you looked in Social Security? I think the hubby may be able to get disability through SS. Something to look into. I think you can call and say I want to apply for all of them, there are many different kinds, then once you are on SS, I am pretty sure then you get the insurance. Hope this helps and know there is someone that cares and hopes you get the help you deserves.
