I Can't Figure It Out

Here are some things I need help with:

1.  Carolyn's top two teeth have finally popped through her gums (after only two months of me blaming every, single temper tantrum on teething).  If she's not sucking on her paci, she's now grinding her teeth together.  First of all, it drives me absolutely nuts, and second of all, isn't it really, really bad for her teeth?  Or am I just overreacting?  Either way, it has to stop.

2.  Carolyn loves to be outside.  I love taking her outside.  But, how do I stop her from putting every, single thing she comes across in her mouth?  I honestly don't care if she ingests some grass and dirt, but there are lots of other things she puts in her mouth that probably shouldn't be in there.  Plus, I'm scared to death she's going to choke on half of the stuff she picks up.

3.  And speaking of being outside, what's the best sunscreen for a baby?  And the best way to apply it?  Getting Carolyn to sit still long enough to get her whole body covered is usually wrestling match-esque.

4.  We've tried every, single sleeping diaper on the market and still we're having diaper leaks about every third night.

5.  Is it wrong to put Carolyn in a forward facing carseat if she meets the weight requirements but is still under a year old? I'm going to be installing her new carseat soon and I'd rather just put it in once and then not have to mess with it again.

With grinding the teeth, I think it is normal for babies to do it. I know Landon did at first, but then the newness wore off. I hate the sound as well. He will occasionally still do it, but it is because he knows I hate it and wants me to react.

We use Aveeno baby sunscreen.

We put Landon forward facing when he was around 11 months old. He had met the weight requirement and his feet were beginning to touch the back of the seat. Have you seen where the American Pediatric Board is encouraging parents to leave the car seats rear facing until they turn 2? I think that is crazy!!

I am still up in the air about the rear facing until two- but the research does back it up. Apparently it is totally okay for their feet to touch the back of the seat. In a major accident they might break a leg or ankle, but not their neck appears the reasoning behind it.

As someone who is going to have an incredibly tall kiddo, I don't know if rear facing until 2 is even possible with how tall he is going to be. Or ow it would even fit in my car. But I have friends who kept their kids rear facing until they were 4 so it must be possible... in a van maybe?

I mean technically it is safest for all humans to be rear facing in a moving vehicle when you think about it.

My sister in law put my nephews forward facing between 10-13 months.

About the eating everything....Do you have a walker? If you put her in the walker outside she's not crawling on the ground picking up every little thing that fascinates her. And she can't really reach your plants to rip off leaves to chew on. AND she's still get exercise using different muscles.

My pediatrician keeps reminding me about the change to 2 years for rear facing--but my youngest--now almost 2 anyway has been forward facing since around his first birthday. His legs were squished up on the seat even then! I think its nuts to expect them to sit that way. I remember crawling around on the floor board and climbing on the console when I was a kid--I feel so bad for them on long car trips...
We use spray on tearless banana boat for kids as my son will not let me smear on sunscreen--works really well for us!

Vivian has been grinding her teeth for a while now. It makes me want to scratch my eyeballs out! When I catch her do it, I just try to distract her with a toy to put in her mouth or pop a cheerio in her mouth...makes her forget she was doing it.
As far as the car seat, we won't be 1 utnil July and I don't plan on turning her around. She loves to be in the car and never complains, so I figure as long as she is happy, I am happy. I have a mirror hooked up so she can see me - so she loves that and I think that keeps her happy. We talk as we drive and play games with sounds as much as I can to keep her engaged while driving.
When I have to work outside or just take her out to play, I either put Vivian in her bouncer outside or we have a swing that she loves to hang out in. I haven't let her hit the ground yet for the fact that she will do the same as Carolyn...eat everything!

I hate parental fear-mongering. Just hate it. But having been an Emergency Services person,I can see the wisdom in rear-facing to two.
Here's a video that shows why.

And teeth grinding goes away.

I've loved the sunscreen for babies that come on towelette/wipes. I have gotten them at Babies R Us. Super fast and easy application. I like the spray-on kind too. Go for the name brands though -- one of my kids had a really bad reaction to a cheaper brand (don't remember the name).

I've gone through so many carseat laws I don't know what's current or if I would agree with it. ;)

Grinding teeth is something I just can't tolerate. I remember one or more of my kids doing it as babies, but I would stick my finger in there to nip it in the bud. I would rather have a bite than have to listen to the grinding. :)

I agree with the suggestions that have already been given for keeping baby from putting everything in her mouth. She'll be doing that for at least another year, so you've just got to make sure she can't reach anything really dangerous.

Good luck! :)
