Husband calls Ty Detmer a "pretty little girl". Mostly because of this. That's right. Those are his Aggies in the 1990 Holiday Bowl. Ty Detmer ended up with two separated shoulders and a sprained ankle. Even now, it hurts my little feelers to see him be treated so brutally. You gotta look out for him. He was just a little guy. Natalie's mother, Jill, still hates A&M because she's certain they hurt Ty on purpose.
Natalie and I prefer to remember Ty like this. I'm sorry, is that the Superman theme playing the background? I THINK SO!
I also don't mind remembering him like this:
Oh, hello, Mr. Heisman.
I used to love former BYU basketball player, Scott Sonnenburg but the most I ever did was try to be pretty daily (which was hard because I was growing out an ill advised bowl cut at the time) when I went to our mutual class (Book of Mormon 121). Oh, and I might have invited him to dinner at our apartment, which was the worst dinner I've ever had in my entire life. He might have kind-of-sort-of avoided me after that.
To go even further, when I was a BYU student, starting quarterback, Kevin Feterick was in several of my classes. Meaning that he was signed up for them but never really showed up. Just so you know, he was a bloomin' idiot. I know this because I had to tutor him. For classes in recreation management AKA camping, initiative games, and program planning. C'mon, man!
So anyway, I was joking with Natalie that I'm happy she's producing the 2028 quarterback class for BYU as I am currently producing one of the linemen that will protect him (and I know this because my latest need is what? French fries. All the time. Only a lineman could want french fries that much).
This did not make Husband happy.
I said, "Just don't be upset when your son signs a letter of intent to play for Bronco Mendenhall at BYU."
His reply?
"Baby, do you really think I'm going to let that happen? Me? With all my charisma?"
I said, "I can't help it if he will love his mother and her team more than he loves you and yours."
Sometime after that, Husband proclaimed that he would no longer root for the Cougars and that we are now "enemies and must do battle."

Thanks once again for the laughs. We had a dog growing up named Bosco, after the BYU National Championship winning QB, Robbie Bosco.
I remember you talking about Kev-o and what a moron he was. Good times. Speaking of moronic, can we mention half of the football team that treated us like crap during men's basketball? It kind of turned me off liking football for about 4 minutes. Good thing there were some very nice people that played on the team that made up for the losers. :)
I used to have the biggest crush on him. But I was young when he was at BYU, so no stalking on my part.
I always thought he would make an excellent Joseph Smith in a church moive.
That was your best blog post ever!! :) I can't believe I hadn't read it until now!
A couple of things:
1. I still have the BYU 1990 team photo up in my room at home.
2. I love that you wrote that my mom hates A&M cause they hurt Ty on purpose....she is REALLY passionate about it!
3. I can't believe we weren't friends at BYU!! We really should have been. One of my good friends, Larry Moeaki, was roomates with Scott Sonnenburg. He used to always introduce him like this, "Hey everyone, this is Scott Sonnenburg from the 1 and 25 BYU basketball team!" Kinda funny...
4. I had a huge crush on Kevin Federick too...until we went to his apartment and he had half-naked Pamela Anderson posters up all over. Gross.
5. Our good friends are in Ty's ward in Austin and I MIGHT have tried to get them to take us by his house when we went down there to go trick-or-treating. The good news is that if you or I ever move to Austin, I know what neighborhood we need to live in so we can be in his ward. :)
6. And lastly, little boys are total Momma's boys so The Lentil will go to whatever school you choose! We're brainwashing Isaac and Ty to think BYU is the only option! :)
