Today was my first day at my new job down to the Lamar University. This also marks the first time in my life where I've actually had an 8-5 job. I'm pretty fired up about it.
Highlights of the day included:
1. I got to go to a human resources training where we watched a sweet video on sexual harassment. They had several examples and then we had to guess whether or not it would be considered sexual harassment. I guessed no on every single one. Because if you've lived and worked in Japan, all of those examples seem pretty tame.
2. Human resources training was also tons of fun due to the fact that there was one of those great know-it-alls. You know. Just like the one who has been in every class you've ever taken. He kept taking it upon himself to talk over the presenter to tell everyone how to calculate their death benefits. He also might have mentioned seventeen times that he was just switching jobs at the College of Business, that he hadn't actually been hired just now like the rest of us.
3. I had a delicious lunch at the campus Subway. I kept looking around thinking, "When did they start letting 12-year-olds into college?" Seriously. I also almost had to hit the whiny girl standing behind me in the 30 minute long line. Listen girl, you need to shut up or you're going to get it.
4. There's nothing I love more than a trip to the ID center. Because no ID picture I've ever taken has looked good. Today was no exception. I look a little Asian in my picture. Asian with buck teeth. The good news is the pictures is pretty blurry so it could be me, Lisa Ling, or Angelina Jolie. If Lisa Ling and Angelina Jolie had rounder faces.
5. On arrival to the office I got to go down and pick out my own desk from Surplus. I also got to meet some of the Lamar University football team, which apparently practices in the parking lot of the basketball arena until the football stadium is finished. My desk should arrive sometime between tomorrow and three months from now. Welcome to the paperwork and bureaucracy of the State of Texas.
6. I met my boss who is the Director of Facilities, Planning, and Construction at Lamar. We went over carpet, tile, and turf samples for the new stadium. He also brought me into his office to tell me that I had been the unanimous number one pick for the job. And that there wasn't even a close second. I almost kissed him. No, I didn't make any of that up.
7. I still really have no idea what my actual job is. I know it will involve a whole lot of paperwork. And phone calls from important people. And paint samples. The awesome thing is that after my background check is complete, I get to drive a sweet Lamar van sometimes and even a golf cart every once-in-a-while.
8. I went from work straight to school. I walked into the room to discuss my client's massage needs and about halfway through the conversation I realized I was stroking her hair. Apparently I subconsciously couldn't help it. Her hair was so pretty and thick!

You weren't tested on the harassment questions, were you? I think that job sounds awesome. Let me know if you get any good paint samples, as you never know when I might call you up and want to know what the cool college color is. And I can't believe you stroked her hair. Did she say anything to you? I guess you could always make up something about how it stimulates the nerves in the head and calms the third chakra. Strictly a Japanese move.
Oh how fun!!! I am so jealous of your job already! Are you working for Coach Woodard? What's your job title? I want more details!!
Congratulations again! It sounds like you had a fun day. and the stroking your clients hair cracked me up. Did she say anything about it?
In my defense, she was already laying (lying?) on the table. So, I mean, the stroking of the hair had a 50/50 chance of being considered part of the massage. At least that's the excuse I'm going to roll with.
Holli, I work at Facilities Management.
Goodluck!! I look forward to reading about your new adventures!
