They've (no, I have no idea who "they" are) just issued a statement saying that mandatory evacuation will begin for Beaumont at 6 am tomorrow. Grrr...Gustav STILL isn't even in the Gulf yet. How do they know I need to leave?
The projections say that even if Gustav hits New Orleans or a little farther west, it will still be a Category 1 when it reaches Beaumont.
They say that if we don't leave, we will be "on our own" for 72-hours, possibly without power. Husband has already been assigned to work in Houston so that takes care of the question of whether or not we will leave (Houston? What kind of an evacuation is THAT?).
It just means so much work - and so much waste. We have to clean out our fridge and freezer before we go, just in case the power does go off and stays off for days or just in case the storm comes closer to us or is stronger when it gets here. Everything will be thrown away.
And, we have to pack up. While I feel that the evacuation really isn't necessary at this point (there was a Cat 1 last year and I was NOT impressed to say the least), I don't want to take the chance of it strengthening, hitting here, and ruining all of my stuff while we are mandatorily gone...who knew that I was one of those people who is so attached to their "stuff".
Husband says all he needs is his laptop and his school books. I, on the other hand, cannot leave without my boxes (yes, that is plural) of journals and scrapbooks.
I'm already feeling overwhelmed over the prospect of having to drive my own car in Houston - Houston traffic scares me to death.
I don't know what to do first. Until I decide, I think I'll go make some cookies. Making cookies is excellent hurricane evacuation preparation.

That makes zero sense. Houston will still get hit with thunderstorms and power outages. There's nothing wrong with taking your journals and your scrapbooks. Well, here's to hoping you have a fun Exodus and aren't stuck in exodus traffic while Gustav hits. :)
