Cat Whisperer

I just figured out why I never lose weight. Yesterday, after some fancy bush whacking, I found a walking route with very little exposure to the busy road that runs in front of our apartment. While walking to the church and back (which I thought was going to take me a lot longer than it actually did), I ran into several neighborhood cats.

I love cats. I can't explain to you the feeling I get when I see them - like I HAVE to pet them. I believe this weird obsession stems from when my sister and I were little. The barn cats used to have kittens in very out of the way places. Whenever my dad would find them, my older brothers and sisters would beg him not to tell us where they were. While dad played along for a while, eventually he would let it slip that the old Grandma cat had moved her babies to such-and-such location. Carolyn and I would literally RUN to the barn, find the kitties, and promptly maul them. Naturally, this led to the mom cat moving them before the end of the day.

So, as I was saying, I HAVE to pet the cats. Every time I saw a cat yesterday, I had to stop and try to coax them out from wherever they were. This included walking up people's driveways (which is probably a good way to freak people out) and talking TO and FOR the cat (I also can't see a cat without talking for them).

By the time I got home, I had been out "exercising" for an hour and a half, 45 minutes of which, I am sure, was spent meowing, crouching, and using every method I knew to get the kitty to come out (I don't give up easily).

Too bad cat whisperer is not a recognized profession or method of exercise. If it were, I would be both rich AND skinny.

Sounds like a fun walking trail! But, I can't share your sentiments about cats. I'm a dog person. And, I frequently do the same "whispering" techniques with dogs.

Unfortuantly, I've passed the characteristics down to my daughter. Gabi has climbed all over 250 lb. Saint Bernards but if you put her in a room with a cat, she'll scream bloody murder.

I also feel the same way about dogs...I love them. However, I am much more reluctant to try to pet a dog that is behind a fence - you never know how a dog will react if they don't know you (if there is a person walking their dog, you can bet I'm going to try to pet it).

If cats are scared or upset, they let you know before you ever get to them. And, the worst thing they can inflict is a scratch - not a bite to the throat.

We just got two kittens! I have never really been a "cat person", but I love these kitties. Check my blog for a picture.
